2025 is almost here, and with the new year comes new opportunities. In 2024, nearly 40% of Americans made New Year’s resolutions—personal goals set to improve various aspects of life, from health and fitness to finances, careers, and relationships. But what if you focused on something equally important this year: your mental health? Keep reading to explore how a resolution for mental well-being can make 2025 your best year yet!

Limit Screen Time or Take a Break from Social Media

Are you hoping to escape the habit of spending hours on a screen or tablet each day? Do you find yourself falling into the dreadful trap of  “doom-scrolling” on social media? Research shows that excessive screen time has been linked to poorer mental health, increasing the risk of illnesses like depression and anxiety. While it’s becoming increasingly hard to limit screen time in today’s digital age, setting daily screen time goals, adopting screen-free hobbies, and putting the phone down during mealtime are great resolutions to adopt for 2025. If you’re looking for a more detailed guide on how to “digital detox,” click here!

Get Quality Sleep

While it’s easy to dismiss the importance of sleep in the midst of social, athletic, career, or academic commitments, quality rest is crucial for brain and mental health. Getting adequate sleep consistently (at least eight hours per night for teenagers) improves memory, attention, creativity, and learning. Whether you commit to avoiding caffeine later in the day, following a relaxing bedtime routine (screen-free, of course), or sticking to a consistent sleep schedule, practicing sleep hygiene has the potential to give your mental health a serious boost.

Prioritize Daily Movement

Over ⅔ of Americans fall short of meeting the physical guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Reaching these standards—at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercises per week while incorporating muscle-strengthening activities—can help improve both physical and mental health, reducing stress and boosting energy. If the idea of a gym membership doesn’t excite you, try resolutions like joining a sports team or training for a 5K with friends. These activities can make fitness enjoyable and social, turning exercise into something you look forward to.

Dedicate Time each day to Journaling

Looking for a way to calm anxiety, cope with stress, and boost your mood? Try journaling! Even a few minutes of writing each morning or night can help you process life events, work against intrusive or harmful inner dialogue, and set goals for the future. If sticking to traditional journaling proves to be tough, mix it up with expressive writing, gratitude journaling, and bullet journaling—each offers a unique way to tap into your thoughts and feelings.

Disconnect by Reconnecting with Nature

While many New Year’s resolutions focus on speeding up—learning a new language, advancing your career, or launching a side hustle—sometimes what you really need is the chance to slow down. Reconnecting with nature can relieve stress, reduce feelings of loneliness, and help you feel more connected to your community. If a nature-related resolution sounds like what you need, consider starting a garden, exploring a new hiking trail each weekend, or volunteering with a local environmental group each month.

In 2025, let’s work to make mental health a priority. By practicing meaningful resolutions—whether it's reducing screen time, improving sleep, staying active, journaling, or reconnecting with nature—you can set yourself up for a year of growth and well-being.
